Woodhams first in Atlanta to use AcrySof®IQ PanOptix®Trifocal Intraocular Lens

The doctors and staff at Woodhams Eye Clinic are excited to be the first clinic in Atlanta to use the AcrySof®IQ PanOptix® Trifocal Intraocular Lens (IOL). PanOptix® is the first and only trifocal lens for patients undergoing Prelex® or cataract surgery. PanOptix is clinically shown to deliver exceptional near, intermediate and distance vision while significantly reducing the need for glasses after surgery.

"FDA approval of the Alcon Laboratories Panoptics represents a major step forward in lens implant technology", say J.Trevor Woodhams, M.D., Chief of Surgery at Woodhams Eye Clinic in Atlanta. "This new intraocular lens brings us closer to being able to reverse the age-related decline in vision resulting in dependence on reading glasses, bifocals, and the eventual development of cataracts. The goal of clear, natural vision at near for reading, intermediate focus for computer use, and clear, focused vision at distance -all with minimal to no need for glasses or contact lenses -is now here."

Woodhams Eye Clinic clinical director, Claudia Priego says, "we are so excited to be able to bring this technology to our patients in Atlanta. It's a wonderful advancement in eye surgery and it proves again that Woodhams is on the leading edge, helping patients over 50 live the lives they want to live without glasses or contacts."

"We are proud to bring this new class of IOLs to the largest eye care market in the world," said David J. Endicott, Chief Executive Officer of Alcon. "We are leveraging Alcon's years of experience with PanOptix in other countries to provide the best possible training and support for U.S. surgeons. Our goal is to ensure optimal outcomes for cataract patients looking to correct their vision at all distances, with the vast majority of them never needing to wear glasses post-surgery."

If you are over 50 and you are wearing reading glasses or bifocals, or you are experiencing the signs of presbyopia due to the natural aging of the eye, you may be interested in scheduling a PreLex or cataracts consultation at our Atlanta office.

What is an AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® Lens?

The AcrySof® IQ PanOptix Trifocal IOL is a type of multifocal intraocular lens used to focus images clearly onto the back of your eye to allow clear vision after cataract removal. Additionally, this lens allows for better near and intermediate vision compared to what a monofocal lens would provide.

What is an intraocular lens?

An intraocular lens (also referred to as "IOL") is an artificial lens that is implanted during surgery to replace your cataract lens. There are many different types of IOLs—some are designed to provide only distance vision, while trifocal lenses improve near, intermediate, and distance vision. After a surgeon removes your cataract-clouded lens, an intraocular lens will be implanted as its replacement.

What is a trifocal lens?

A trifocal lens is an intraocular lens that is engineered to improve near, intermediate and far vision in addition to offering other benefits beyond a standard cataract lens.
