— New microsurgical presbyopia treatment corrects near vision problems
that naturally arise with age —

ATLANTA (May 14, 2015) – Woodhams Eye Clinic, metro Atlanta’s first vision correction surgery center, has achieved yet another first – it’s become the first eye care practice in metro Atlanta to offer a new, groundbreaking procedure that uses a corneal inlay to improve near vision. Woodhams Eye Clinic performs more than 1,500 vision correction procedures annually.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the first non-intraocular microsurgical device to treat presbyopia. Often called “farsightedness” or “middle-age eyes,” this condition is characterized by a slow, progressive loss of near vision, making reading difficult and eventually impossible without correction.

By the time they reach their 40s, all people will experience these symptoms, usually requiring the use of bifocals or reading glasses. Unlike nearsightedness (myopia,) presbyopia does not affect distance vision.

The tech start-up company AcuFocus has tested their microsurgical device for over seven years and it was declared “safe and effective” by the FDA in mid-April. The 10-minute Presby-fix™ procedure consists of a laser microsurgical insertion of a 3.8 millimeter ultra-thin disc into the cornea, very similar to LASIK.

The doctors at Woodhams Eye Clinic have been working for over 10 years on a diagnostic device, the HD Analyzer, which makes this procedure possible.

“We have long been committed to bringing innovative microsurgical solutions to Atlanta and the Southeast that help people improve their vision so as to enjoy life to its fullest, without dependence on glasses or contacts,” says J. Trevor Woodhams, MD. “Presby-fix™ can be the long-term solution for people in their 40s to mid-60s whose near vision has diminished with age – and who are tired of squinting and struggling with reading glasses.”

Those who are interested in the procedure must undergo an evaluation at Woodhams Eye Clinic to determine if Presby-fix™ is the right procedure for their specific condition. Call (770) 394-4000 to schedule an evaluation, or visit www.woodhamseye.com for more information.
