How long does my eyesight need to be stable for before getting laser eye surgery?

In general you want for your vision (using your spectacle prescription as a proxy) to have been stable for at least a year. You really have to be out of contact lenses for about 2 weeks to find this out because contacts (especially hard ones) can change that Rx somewhat.

It is not quite so simple, though, because what exactly is the “vision” you are referring to? If you have LASIK after age 40 there are going to be ongoing changes in your near vision due to the natural lens aging (presbyopia). But that isn’t necessarily a contraindication and shouldn’t affect the distance vision outcome .

It is also possible to intentionally over-correct very young nearsighted patients somewhat in anticipation of slight worsening of the degree of myopia. This is because their accommodation will compensate, not affecting the distance vision outcome while allowing the young patient to “grow into” a slight increase of myopia.

You definitely want to get all the information you can gather to take to your surgical evaluation to properly assess recent refractive changes.
