Does the ophthalmologist have equipment that can objectively measure whether someone has double vision, and not just from the patient saying they do?

Of course we do! Not only can we confirm objectively that the eyes are not in proper alignment, we can measure the degree of it in all directions of gaze.

Sometimes, a complaint about double vision (called "diplopia") can be in just one eye. This could be the case where there is cataract or post-surgery in some kinds of lens implant or after a complicated LASIK.
