LASIK Surgery

LASIK SurgeryLaser Vision Correction is one of the most widely performed procedures in the country. Dr. Woodhams was one of the first doctors in the world to perform this surgery.

Since Dr. Woodhams began performing vision surgery in 1983, Radial Keratotomy (RK) became the standard, but was replaced by Photorefractive Keratotomy (PRK) and by LASIK, as well as the newer, more precise IntraLASIK™ which is the all-laser procedure in which no blades are used during your vision correction. In addition to the latest in laser vision correction, several newer procedures, such as Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) and Prelex™ for our patients over 50, are now available for vision correction. Dr. Woodhams, experienced in the entire range of procedures, can help select the one that is proper for your particular vision problem.

Below are brief descriptions of each of the laser vision correction procedures, as well as other vision correction procedures offered by Woodhams Eye Clinic.

About Laser Vision Correction

  • LASIK - A laser vision correction procedure which uses a blade to perform the first step, which is to create a flap on the cornea. This allows the doctor to access the cornea to re-shape it with the laser.
  • Intralasik – Over the past several years this method has been used by a growing number of surgeons because it is more precise and problem-free than traditional lasik. This procedure uses a laser to create a very thin and precise flap.
  • LASEK - Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis - This method is used mostly for people with thin or flat corneas who are poor candidates for LASIK or Intralasik. While this procedure does provide excellent results, the healing time is somewhat longer.

Woodhams Eye Clinic, LLC announces exclusive, all-laser vision correction surgery in Atlanta!

IntraLASE® FS Laser and IntraLASE® Software replaces blades in Corneal Flap creation; eliminate many IntraLASE surgery complications

Woodhams Eye Clinic, LLC introduced the next-generation of IntraLASE to Atlanta in 2003, and is the most experienced provider of this "all-laser" approach in Atlanta. The clinic was founded by Dr. J. Trevor Woodhams in 1985 and provides a variety of procedures for improving vision, including IMPLANTABLE CONTACT LENSES (ICL) PRELEX™ lens implants, IntraLASE and PRK.

Dr. J. Trevor Woodhams was one of the first doctors in the country to perform IntraLASE, and since the beginning of IntraLASE he has performed thousands of successful procedures. As a past clinical professor of Ophthalmology at Emory University and a researcher, he has refined the IntraLASE technique into a unique process found only at Woodhams Eye Clinic in Atlanta, GA. There are a lot of differences between Woodhams IntraLASE and common IntraLASE, but the most important difference is the results. Woodhams IntraLASE is performed only at Woodhams Eye Clinic, LLC.

Woodhams IntraLASE procedures are performed only on the clinic's FDA-approved VisX S4 3D laser using the VisX WavePrint™ system. The VISX WavePrint System is a diagnostic and treatment approach that provides a precise measurement of your eyes - like a "fingerprint" of your vision. This allows us to provide you with truly personalized vision correction.

The WavePrint system creates a three-dimensional map of your eye, plotted to 200 points, approximately three times the precision achieved by the best of other technologies. From this information, Dr. Woodhams can create an extremely personalized plan for your procedure.

The WavePrint system also includes two other highly advanced features that contribute to the superior outcome of your procedure. They are:

  • Variable Spot Scanning - an exclusive VISX laser technology that allows a larger treatment area to best accommodate your visual needs and reduce or eliminate halos that can occur with less precise treatments.
  • 3D ActiveTrak - this technology automatically and instantaneously tracks the minute movements of your eye during the laser treatment. This means that you no longer have to hold your eye perfectly still, which is a challenge for many patients.

IntralaseWoodhams Eye Clinic was the first and is now the most experienced IntraLASE provider in Georgia to use the WavePrint system in conjunction with the exacting technology of IntraLASE. Coupled with the skill and experience of Dr. Woodhams, it provides unmatched results for Woodhams IntraLASE patients.

Woodhams Atlanta IntraLASE is not the traditional IntraLASE procedure; it is an entire process - beginning with Atlanta's most precise evaluation, including over 15 advanced tests (some of which are available only at Woodhams Eye Clinic), and ending with results far better than any published results in Atlanta. Our process includes:

  • A single, experienced doctor to interpret the evaluation, prepare the surgical plan, perform the procedure, and conduct the next-day follow-up.
  • The 200-point precision of WavePrint™. Woodhams Eye Clinic is the most experienced WaveFront IntraLASE provider in Atlanta with this advanced diagnostic technology. Others diagnose only to one-third of WavePrint's precision.
  • The use of only the safest, most precise laser. Dr. Woodhams performs all Woodhams IntraLASE procedures using the FDA-approved VisX S4 with 3D Active Tracker. You can watch a live procedure right now!

Woodhams Eye Clinic, LLC, was the first Center in Georgia to offer patients the IntraLASE™ procedure!

What is the difference between Woodhams IntraLASE and Common IntraLASE?

To put it simply, the best IntraLASE process produces the best IntraLASE results. That process requires personal attention by your doctor, safety, comfort, precision of the best technology, and a long-term commitment to you. A well-known provider name doesn't necessarily mean the best results. Nor does the highest price. You'll find out, if you ask the right questions, that IntraLASE isn't the same everywhere, and how to know the difference.

Common IntraLASE is a IntraLASE process that has one or more of the following:

  1. older technology, which isn't as precise, for diagnosis or treatment
  2. a scanning-slit or older laser technology, which doesn't produce as precise and smooth results
  3. no automatic eye tracking for the safety and comfort of patients
  4. different doctors for analysis, surgical planning, IntraLASE procedure and next-day checkup, so you're handed from one to the other (some even use "circuit rider" doctors who fly in only to do the IntraLASE surgery)
  5. less than 12 months of follow-up care.
  6. no commitment to you beyond their basic follow-up period.
  7. not surprisingly, lower IntraLASE success rates

Woodhams IntraLASE results exceed nationally recognized standards and, according to published information, are the best in Atlanta: for 2007, 99.9% of nearsighted patients no longer depended on glasses or contacts full time. This outstanding success for Dr. Woodhams' patients results from several important differences from Common IntraLASE:

  • At Woodhams Eye Clinic, Dr. Woodhams personally performs your pre-IntraLASE evaluation, creates your surgical plan, performs the IntraLASE procedure, and checks you personally the next day.
  • He uses only the most advanced, tested and precise FDA approved VisX Star S4 laser with WavePrint™ diagnosis and treatment system, the first one in Georgia, to assure the safest, most personalized, and best IntraLASE results for you. WavePrint™ includes:
    • The WaveScan™ automatic, three-dimensional 200 point visual diagnosis and WavePrint map to provide a personalized IntraLASE correction plan for each eye.
    • 3D ActiveTrak™ eye tracker, which allows you to relax as the laser beam automatically follows your eye movements. You don't have to worry about holding your eyes still during the procedure.
    • Variable Spot Scanning, an exclusive technology that allows for a larger treatment area for more personalized, precise and smoother correction.
  • Full 12 months of follow-up care.
  • The best IntraLASE process produces the best IntraLASE results!

IntraLASE outcomes can be confusing. Some Atlanta IntraLASE providers quote a range of percentages; others pool the results of a number of doctors.

We'll make it as simple as possible:

Of all Dr. Woodhams near-sighted patients - with or without astigmatism - for the year 2007 (almost 3,000 cases), only one continues to use glasses or contacts full time. That's a success rate of over 99.9%.

With our attention to detailed, precision WavePrint™ testing and Active Tracking S4 laser, more than a third enjoy vision better than 20/20!

PreLex™

PreLex™See near to far without glasses -

One of the latest developments in the treatment of refractive disorders is the use of Multi-Focal Lens Implants, also called WOODHAMS PRELEX™ and IMPLANTABLE CONTACT LENSES or ICL. Dr. Woodhams was among the first surgeons in the United States to utilize Lens Implants in the treatment of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Multi-focal lens implants are especially effective in allowing patients who wear bifocal prescription glasses, or who are extremely nearsighted, to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses and contact lenses.
