LASIK

Laser Vision Correction is one of the most widely performed procedures in the country. Dr. Woodhams was one of the first doctors in the world to perform this surgery.

Dr. Woodhams began performing vision surgery in 1983, when Radial Keratotomy (RK) was the standard, but that was soon replaced by Photorefractive Keratotomy (PRK) and a little later by LASIK, as well as the newest, more precise IntraLASIK™.  This is the all-laser procedure in which no blades are used during your vision correction.

In addition to the latest in laser vision correction, several OTHER procedures, such as Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) for extremely nearsighted patients (-3 to -15 diopters)and Prelex™ for our patients over 50, are now available for vision correction. Dr. Woodhams, experienced in the entire range of procedures, can help select the one that is proper for your particular vision problem.

Below are brief descriptions of each of the LASER vision correction procedures offered by Woodhams Eye Clinic.

LASIKAbout Laser Vision Correction

  • LASIK - A laser vision correction procedure that uses a blade to perform the first step, which is to create a flap on the cornea. This allows the doctor to access the cornea to re-shape it with the laser.

  • Intralasik – Over the past several years this method has been used by a growing number of surgeons because it is more precise and problem-free than traditional lasik.  This procedure uses a laser to create a very thin and precise flap.

  • PRK/LASEK - Photo Refractive or Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis - This method is used mostly for people with thin or flat corneas who are poor candidates for LASIK or Intralasik. While this procedure does provide excellent results, the healing time is somewhat longer.

PRK

PRKPRK

Photorefractive Keratectomy - similar to LASIK in the reshaping of the cornea, but uses a different procedure for preparing the cornea for reshaping. Although PRK is an older procedure than LASIK or Intralase, and has largely been replaced by those methods, PRK is still useful for patients with larger pupils or thin corneas.

SBK

SBKSub-Bowmans Keratomileusis (SBK) is a term used to describe Intralase which is the BLADE FREE Laser vision correction or Intralasik.  During this procedure, a thin flap is created with a laser which allows the surgeon to access the cornea for re-shaping with the vision correction laser.  The flap is gently put back into place after the vision correction is completed.

Advantages to SBK or Intralase include better visual outcomes and a lower incidence of halos after your procedure had healed.
